One of Manchester’s longest running spoken word events, Verbose, returns on Monday 31st March 2025 at the Kings Arms.
Verbose has a proud history of bringing together a vibrant mix of live literature from poetry, prose and everything in between. Verbose welcomes new talent to the open mic alongside established writers and performers wanting to showcase new material, giving audiences the chance to hear work that is on its way to be published or perhaps feature at festivals including Glastonbury, Edinburgh Fringe and many more.
Over the years Verbose has hosted writers who have since gone on to win local, national and international awards for their work or feature on national radio and beyond. A night that offers any audience a chance to see an incredible array of talent month in, month out.
Introducing our headliners for March
Pinky May is a 27-year-old Burmese poet and doctor based in Manchester. Her writing is deeply intimate, delving into themes of love, loss, identity, and relationships. She recently received a DYCP grant from Arts Council England, has headlined events across the UK, and was a judge for the Poetry Place slam. Pinky shares her work online via Instagram (@pinkymayy), and her debut poetry collection will be out later this year.
John Clifford has shared his poetry in venues around the UK, Europe and the US – ranging from castles and cathedrals to cafes, clubs, pubs and his favourite friends’ kitchens. A Mind Over Matter national slam finalist, his work has been displayed in the streets and shops of Manchester’s Northern Quarter, produced and recorded with alt pop duo Iris Lyre, and broadcast on BBC Upload.
Since 2022 John has performed in six festivals and a dozen cities in the UK and abroad, most recently Wolverhampton Literature Festival in February this year. The best of his notebook scribbles were published in his first collection Tell Us What We Are with Written Off Publishing in 2023.
Together with a packed and varied open mic line up, March´s Verbose promises to be a night to remember and we recommend securing your seat whilst you still can!
