Tom Blackwell ‘Regency Cafe’ Album Launch
16th September 2023 - 7:30 pm
The Kings Arms

Now based on Teesside, Tom Blackwell emerged from the Manchester folk club circuit, where he discovered the country, blues and gospel music that would become the foundations of his work.

A prolific writer with a visceral and dynamic performance style, Blackwell has been
performing across the UK and beyond for the last 15 years, honing his craft both on and off
stage.

REGENCY CAFE
Appearing to be conducted entirely in liminal spaces, Tom Blackwell’s latest treatise arrives
fully-formed on the cold platform between trains, or sun-drunk and drifting to sleep in a
hired car, marooned at a fast-food parking lot somewhere. Our narrator is stowing
keepsakes at the same rate as banishing the looming spectres of journeys past. The whole
drama happens off the page – will we arrive at the titular establishment? And does it
matter? Background guitars surface, distant harmonica threatens to arrive, Blackwell’s
trademark vocal is still there at the centre of things, but this time we’re never certain it’ll
be there for long, perhaps jumping on a coach, percussive shakers lulling, or maybe stashing
a guitar in the overhead locker and heading for the next square on the board. A tableau as
replete with opportunistic impulse as seized stasis, Blackwell casts the listener as arch
confidante, leaving us pondering our answer to his invocation to meet.
